Dorothy Ann Day Steadman passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 24, 2023 at the age of 93. Dorothy was born in Memphis, TN on June 1, 1929 to Ralph Waldo Day and Nicie Hurley Day both of whom preceded her in death.
Dorothy was married for 53 years to Robert Leslie Steadman, who proceeded her in death, and had two children: the late Robert Andrew ‘Andy’ Steadman of Olive Branch, MS (Yvonne Steadman Jones), and Carol Steadman Johnson (Robert) of Germantown, TN. She had three granddaughters who loved their “Grandmother” dearly: Kate Steadman Stine (Scott) of Newton, NJ, Kimberly Johnson Radant (Matthew) of Oklahoma City, OK, and Melissa Johnson Pippin (Joey) of Brandon, MS. She is survived by four adoring great-grandchildren: Isaiah Jack Stine, Dorothy Mae Stine, Haddon Drew Stine, Seth Colliver Pippin, and twin Radant great grandsons due in July.
Dorothy graduated from Fairview Junior and Central High School and went on to attend Memphis State College, graduating with a degree in Education. She was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority where she made many lifelong friends. After graduation she worked at Memphis Light Gas and Water for several years, and then at Holiday Inn where she remained for 30+ years until her retirement in 1985.
She was a loyal member of Galloway United Methodist Church for over 70 years, only leaving after Galloway closed their doors in 2002. While at Galloway, Dorothy was active in the Women’s Society for Christian Service, was a member of the Pioneer Sunday School Class and taught kindergarten Sunday school classes there for many years. Galloway Church was her church home, and the members there were her extended family. She seldom missed attending church on Sunday and Wednesday, raising both children in the church. Since 2003, Dorothy has been a member of Christ Methodist Church and attended until she was physically unable.
Dorothy also epitomized a servant’s heart apart from church. Dorothy volunteered as a cub scout troop leader, leading Andy’s cub scout troop for several years. She was very active in both of her children’s activities and cared for her mother and late husband in her home. She was also a lively member of two Galloway Ladies Bunko Groups that met monthly for over 50 years. These two groups were a source of fellowship, laughter, sharing and support for each other.
Anyone who knew Dorothy recognized her loving, gentle, caring spirit. She was the epitome of grace, always charming, kind and respectful of others. She had a special place in her heart for everyone especially her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she will be missed beyond measure.
Visitation will be at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Avenue, on Tuesday, May 2, from 12 o’clock noon until 1:30 p.m. with the service following in the chapel. A graveside service will be afterward at Elmwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to Christ Methodist Church or the Church Health Center of Memphis.
