Doris J. Beasley, known affectionately as “Gram” or “Mrs. B” to many in the greater Memphis community was born on December 28th, 1924 in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, Guy D. Sallee and Edna B. Sallee, her brother A. Royal Sallee and his sons (her nephews), A. Royal, Jr., Philip G. and Mark P. Sallee, and her great granddaughter Savannah Swandal. She is survived by her sons: Robert E. Beasley, Jr. of Germantown, TN, and his wife Lennette and Val R. Beasley of State College, PA and his wife Victoria, grandchildren Robin Landes of Mt Juliet,TN, Lindsay Kimbley of Frisco,TX, Lelah Beasley Hedrick of Arlington Heights, IL and Livia Beasley of East Orange, NJ, in addition to great grandchildren Luke and Lexie Landes, Robert and Christopher Kimbley, and Madeleine and Abigail Hedrick.
Mrs. Beasley spent her career at Indiana University, initially at the Indianapolis campus bookstore and later in the Bursar’s Office, in a variety of increasingly responsible positions. She retired in 1988, and moved to be with her family, first in Knoxville, TN and later in Germantown, TN.
Mrs. Beasley was an active member of the PTA at School 76 in Indianapolis when her sons were students there, served as both Secretary and President of Germantown’s Allenby Westfair Home Owner’s Association; and was a long-time member of The Church of The Holy Spirit here in Memphis, where she was a member of the ladies’ evening group and served on the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) team for several years.
Mrs. Beasley will be remembered by all who knew her as a warm, ever-friendly, thoughtful and engaging person, always willing to help others and as a truly remarkable, loving, and joyful Daughter, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and friend to many people throughout the country.
A visitation will be held Sunday, April 10 from 2:30pm until 4:30pm at Memphis Funeral Home. The Funeral Mass will be Monday, April 11 at Church of Holy Spirit at 10:00am. The family will receive friends at a catered reception at Memphis Funeral Home in the Life Remembrance Center from 12:30pm – 2:30pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in her honor to the Oncology Department at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville, TN, 37212.
