Charles Joseph “Joe” Thompson passed away on Monday, September 10, 2012 at Baptist Trinity Hospice House in Collierville. He was born on March 2, 1921, in Rutherford, Tennessee to Charles Franklin and Lura Moore Thompson, who preceded him in death. On February 14, 1942, he married Rebecca Hall, with whom he celebrated 70 years of marriage, and she survives in Memphis.
He graduated from Memphis Technical High School in 1938 and was a printer until his retirement in 1987. He served with the US Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received during the Battle of the Bulge. He was a dedicated member of Temple Baptist Church for 63 years, serving as a deacon, a Sunday School teacher, and as Sunday School Superintendent for more than 40 years.
“Pop” is survived by four daughters, Charlotte Parsons of Wapakoneta, Ohio, Marilyn (Joe) Warrington of Hernando, Mississippi, Janet Tidwell of Millington, and Linda (Jim) Avery of Arlington; a sister, Sue (Al) Luttrell of Green Valley, Arizona; 18 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, and four nieces. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy (Mike) Miser, and a sister, Martha (Louis) Brown.
Funeral services will be held at Memphis Funeral Home - Poplar, on Thursday, September 13, at 2:00 pm, with visitation from 12:00 noon until the service. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family requests that memorials be sent to Temple Baptist Church, 8432 Germantown Road, Olive Branch, Mississippi, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
