Captain Charles Raymond (“Charlie“) Morris, USAF, retired, of Memphis, Tennessee, passed away on November 16, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles F. and Mary Ann Morris, sisters Helen Dempsey, Jean Scannel and brother James F. Morris. Captain Morris is survived by his dear friend and caretaker Sandra Shinault, brother George Morris of Boston, MA, children Patrick Morris of West Palm Beach, FL, daughter Kathy Carter of Hiram, GA, 3 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He was born on November 30, 1927 in Boston, MA and grew up in Watertown, MA.
His military career began in 1944 where he served in the Naval Air Corps as a gunner on torpedo bombers. At the end of WWII he was honorably discharged and moved to California. He re-enlisted in the Army Air Corps, and in 1947 he was transferred to the Air Force where he was stationed in Germany as a navigator and participated in the Berlin Air Lift and as a member of the 384th Air Refueling Squadron, 4050th Air Refueling Wing, Strategic Air Command [SAC], he served as a Navigator on a Combat Crew during the Cold War.
He retired from the Air Force in 1960 with the rank of Captain. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1967 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He went to work for the IRS in 1968 and retired from the IRS in 1979 as a Facilities Manager. He owned and operated a farm in New Hampshire and a farm in Memphis, TN. Visitation will be held at Memphis Funeral Home located at 5599 Poplar Avenue on Monday, November 24th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. (refreshments will be served), and the Funeral service will be held at Memphis Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 25th at 11:00a.m. with burial to follow in West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be sent to Forever Young that honors World War II veterans by returning them back to where they fought.
