Jimmie Joan Myers, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and an irrepressible spirit, passed away June 7, 2024, in Shady Cove, Oregon at the age of 96. She was born in Ontario, Oregon on January 31, 1928.
Jimmie, AKA, Jo spent her early childhood growing up on the Disaster Peak Ranch near the northern central border of Nevada. She learned the hard work and discipline as well as the sacrifices and hardships involved with ranch life that shaped the character of her life.
She would start her days at sunrise feeding the chickens, gathering eggs and other various ranch chores. By age three she was tending the family garden. She grew up in a simpler age and attended a small single room schoolhouse in McDermitt, Nevada. Cars were not as prevalent or accessible as they are today and she really did walk miles to go to school.
Jo attended grade school in Lovelock, high school in Winnemucca, and college at the University of Nevada, Reno. She was working as a waitress at the Humboldt Hotel in Winnemucca when she met Clifford Myers. They married on March 17, 1948 and started a family. She was a loving wife and the devoted mother of three children, Terri Myers (deceased), Michael Myers and Sandy Myers. Her family expanded to eight grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. She lovingly touched all of their lives and was always there when any of her family went through hard times.
Jo started working for the telephone company in the late 1950's as an operator. She was a dedicated employee and flourished over the span of her career. She devoted much of herself to her work and in the process built several lifelong friendships. She was an active member of the Telephone Pioneers. She treasured all of her friends and over the years had to endure losing them one at a time. Each one took a little piece of her heart.
After her retirement from AT&T in 1982, Jo spent a few years living in Oregon with husband Clifford until he passed away in 1990. His passing was a life altering event and she needed to rebuild her life. She moved back to Reno and joined an art group. They met every week to paint and socialize. Her time with her art group friends inspired and revitalized her and she painted a lot of masterpieces.
As her health slowly declined, she moved in with daughter Sandy in Shady Cove, Oregon. She spent her twilight years in the comfort of Sandy's loving care.
Her absence leaves an almost unbearable void in our lives. She was truly the matriarch of our family and a shining star; she will be deeply and dearly missed by her family and all who knew her.
There is no service planned, her body will be cremated and her ashes will be buried in the cemetery in Coquille, Oregon next to her husband Clifford Myers with a dash spread on her mom's grave in Winnemucca and her dad's grave in Las Vegas as per her wishes.
