Born and raised in Auburn, Ca, he lived in the Los Angeles Area before moving back through northern California and settling down in Southern Oregon's beautiful Rogue Valley.
As a musician, writer, and entrepreneur, he wrote numerous music instructional books and courses and multiple books on a variety of other topics. In doing so he created a life that was a blend of passion, business, and hobby all rolled into one that allowed him the flexibility to be with his family and support his children in their athletic, academic, or artistic endeavors.
He was both gregarious and intensely private. Known for his sense of humor and his penchant for practical jokes on his friends, he also attempted to make a point of touching individual lives by knowing everyone's name and creating life experiences for those within his circle of influence. As such he could often be found holding court at local restaurants, interacting with everyone he could, or improvising blues songs with a grandchild or piano students, or even just following up with someone. The list goes on and probably is only completely known by God.
Survived by Wife Bev Shinn, four children and their spouses; Kurt (Jeanette), Kendra (Jeff), Garin (Arzi), and Garth (JP), and 8 grandchildren: Sean, Chris, David, Annika, Kinsley, Keaton, Elisabeth, and Hannah. He is also survived by his older brother Garland, numerous extended family members, and many dear friends who might as well be family.
His wife Bev would like to emphasize Duane's passion for Jesus and playful nature, both of which seemed to even grow through his illness.
Likewise, Kendra wants all to know that her father was the good kind of "yes man." He loved making options and opportunities open for his children, grandchildren, and many others who crossed his path.
Garin points to an individual lesson from his father who taught him that, "Where there is a closed door, there is an open window."
Garth remembers the routine family dinners and annual vacation at Mount Hermon Christian Conference Center where Duane and Bev were married in 1960. Those were good times.
Finally, the family sends its sincerest condolences to the industry that makes lip balm and Mentholatum, as Duane's passing is bound to cause a noticeable dip in sales.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice in Duane’s memory.
