Alice Lou Wisdom of Medford, Oregon passed away on April 2, 2022. Alice was born on May 17, 1933 in Tecumseh, Oklahoma, to Laura Anna Tarbox and Jesse Miller Wisdom. A strong parental influence and significant person in Alice’s life was her stepfather, Robert McLaughlin.
She was a graduate of Wayland Baptist College in Plainview, Texas, and the University of Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada. Alice spent her childhood in Oklahoma and after college worked in Texas in various positions which included several church staff positions, the Southern Baptist Radio and Television Commission, and high school English teacher. In 1979 she moved to Las Vegas, where she spent the next twenty-five years working for the Clark County School District as a teacher, school counselor and elementary school principal. She had a strong love for children, valued supporting teachers and especially loved mentoring first year administrators.
Music was a vital part of her life, and while Alice never pursued music as a career, she sang in the College Park Baptist Church Choir all the years she lived in Las Vegas. When she retired and moved to Florida, she was very active in the music program at Leesburg Baptist Church in Leesburg, Florida. Her resonant speaking voice always made her a sought-after narrator for special programs. She used her voice to express her strong faith and commitment to God.
Alice’s parents and her two sisters, Elizabeth Koons Martin and Juanita Jean Koons Bowers, and niece, Jan Bowers, preceded her in death. She is survived by her niece Laura Jean Martin, and nephew Russell Bowers, as well as cousins and other extended family. She is also survived by her loving friend and caregiver of many years, Sharon Edwins.
A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Hospice provided loving support and care for Alice during her last days, and the family requests anyone wishing to send a memorial gift to contribute to their local Hospice Services.
