Janis was born in Richmond, Virginia and was the eldest of three siblings. She graduated from Northumberland High School and attended a secretarial school in Washington D.C. Janis married the love of her life, Charles P. Fleet, and they were married for 59 years.
Janis was a loving mother to their two children and the "Best Grandma" to five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Janis was an active participant throughout her in life in the Methodist church, most recently the Mechanicsville Methodist church where she served on several committees and was a member of the Lucy Blanton Circle. She was also a Guild member of Covenant Woods (formerly, Richmond Home for Ladies). But most of all she enjoyed time with her family in Richmond and Lewis, Delaware. Her love of the water will have a lasting impression on those she loved as she most enjoyed spending time with family and friends on the Rappahannock River.
Janis’s kindness and friendly personality always put others at ease. She had a strong work ethic and was able to balance many different things throughout her life. Beyond being a mother, homemaker and volunteer, she also helped take care of her own mother and mother-in-law in their later years. Janis was a talented cook, baker, and gardener. She thrilled family and friends with her wonderful crocheted blankets and knitted hats. She also donated many items to those who were in need.
Janis was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles P Fleet Sr; parents, Frederick Jones and Merle Swift; stepfather, William Swift; and sisters, Milly Robertson and Mary Walls.
She is survived by her beloved daughter, Marie DePersis (Angelo-deceased) of Mechanicsville; son, Charles Fleet Jr. (Cecilia) of Mechanicsville; grandchildren, Michael DePersis (Emily), Michelle Puckett (Scotty), Brian Fleet (Alex), Christina Dawson (Caitlin), and Christopher Fleet (Mackenzie); great grandchildren, Stephen and Andrew DePersis, Brianna and Noah Puckett, Aryia and Gabby Fleet, and Elizabeth Fleet; and many loving nieces and nephews.
