Ione Stone Zacharias of McGregor died Wednesday afternoon, September 19, 2012, in Houston at the age of 82. Memorial services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, September 29, 2012, at Zion Lutheran Church, 503 S. Tyler Street, McGregor, Texas with Pastor Walter Klockers officiating. Inurnment will follow in McGregor Cemetery under the direction of Cole Funeral Home, 1113 West Fifth Street, McGregor.
Mrs. Zacharias was born January 16, 1930, in McGregor, Texas, the daughter of the late Coleman Cecil and Ethel (High) Stone where she attended school. On December 19, 1945, she married Julius Albert Zacharias at Zion Lutheran Church. After forty-four years of marriage, he preceded her in death October 8, 1990. For fifteen years she was employed by Smeed Manufacturing until her 1995 retirement.
As long as her health permitted, Ione was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School, assisted with Vacation Bible School and was a member of the Mary Martha Circle. She served the McGregor Community by working as a volunteer with the Meals on Wheels. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, playing dominos and forty-two.
Also preceding her in death were two daughters, Cathy Miller, Judy Chaney and a grandson, Kent Miller.
Survivors include a son Jay Zacharias and wife Rhonda of Houston; a brother Pat Stone of Santa Fe; a sister Neta Abbe of McGregor; seven grandchildren Bobby Thompson and wife Rose, Tommy Thompson and wife Kim, Donna Novak and husband Steve, Michael Miller and wife Amber, Kelly Fucheck, and husband Glen, Megan Zacharias, Ryan Zacharias; eleven great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren and a son-in-law Mike Chaney.
