Thomas Franklin Underwood

Thomas "Tom" Franklin Underwood, age 95, of McDonough, Georgia passed away at his home with his loving family by his side on Saturday, February 19, 2022. Mr. Underwood was a devout Christian for over 80 years. He was a proud U.S. Navy veteran serving from February 29, 1944 until being honorably discharged on March 10, 1947. Tom worked for the U.S. Government as an auditor with the Civil Service for over 30 years. He was born in Muir, Kentucky on March 4, 1926 to the late Lewis David and Olivia Hunter Underwood. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Virginia B. Underwood, Richard D. Underwood, William N. Underwood, Lewis A. Underwood, Viola E. Valentine and John O. Underwood, his first wife, Naomi Pelley Underwood and his second wife, Irene Arthur Underwood. Tom is survived by his children, Glen (Tina) Underwood of Statesville, NC, Janice (Mark) Souto of McDonough, GA and Lynn (Duane) Merkle of Milner, GA. Eight grandchildren, Sandy Underwood, Michelle Sanders, Jason Glenn (Kim) Doyle, Thomas Underwood, Rachel (Derek) Mitchell, Sarah (Russell) Norton, Aaron (Mary) Souto and Christina (James) Badger. Twenty-four great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Four stepchildren, Jeff Arthur (deceased), Karen Williams, Harold Lindsey Arthur and Brent Arthur, eight step grandchildren and a multitude of step great grandchildren. The family will greet friends from 5:00pm - 7:00pm on Thursday, February 24, 2022 at Haisten Funeral Home in McDonough, GA. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00pm on Friday in our chapel.
