Jerry was born Oct 13,1937 in Kalamazoo Michigan to the late Willard Lee Flanders and Lucille Allen Flanders. He is preceded in death by his 2 sisters Jackie Clark of Torrence, California and Joyce Hinga of Lynnwood, Illinois.
He is survived by his son Kevin (Anne) Flanders of Kalamazoo Mi, grandson Sergeant Jason (Melanie Flanders of Fort Drum, New York, daughter Denise ( Patrick ) NeSmith of Watkinsville Ga.,grandson Wyatt, son Doug (Sherry) Flanders and grandchildren Amy, Matt and Nicole of Burlington, Kentucky as well as many nieces and nephews.
Jerry started his 54 year career at Miller lumber company as a draftsman, to work his way up into construction with Beers construction - working on notable buildings such as the Georgia Dome and 191 Peachtree Tower. He went on to retire from Shades Systems in 2010.
Jerry was a very hands-on person, from coaching little league to attending sporting events or helping out his neighbor. He was a devoted father, grandfather and father-in-law, going the extra mile to be supportive and present at life experiences , such as the pinning of his grandson Sergeant Jason Flanders wings in his airborne ceremony, or a play with his granddaughter. He had a larger than life personality and made an impression on everyone he met .
There will be a private family memorial in Vicksburg Michigan at a later date. Jerry will be greatly missed.
Jerry was a big fan of University of Michigan and a supporter of military families around the globe. In lieu of flowers donations are asked to be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
