Donald "Poncho" Eugene Gilmer Sr.

Mr. Donald Eugene “Poncho” Gilmer, Sr., age 68 of McDonough, Georgia passed away September 24, 2017. He was born in Blytheville, Arkansas to the late Herbert Calvin and Linnie Mae Reed Gilmer. He was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Gilmer. Poncho spent 35 years with the Henry County Sheriff’s Department retiring as Captain. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, Loyal Order of the Moose, Sheriff’s Peace Officers Association and the Georgia Sheriff’s Boy’s Youth Home. He enjoyed antique cars and the Georgia Bulldogs. Survivors include his wife, Edna Gilmer; sons, Donald E. “Donnie” Gilmer, Jr. and his wife Penny of Jonesboro, Calvin Gilmer of Chattanooga, TN; grandchildren, Emma Rose Gilmer and Jacob Bryce Gilmer; step grandchildren, Richard Kevin Dukes, Kyle Thomas Dukes, Dakota David Tyler and Lauren Elizabeth Tyler; step great grandson, Richard Noah Dukes. Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 28, 2017 – 11:00 AM in the Haisten Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Al O’Quinn will officiate. Interment will follow at Fairview Memorial Gardens. Friends may visit the family Wednesday from 5:00 – 8:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions are asked to be made to Moose Charities International, 155 S. International Drive, Mooseheart, IL 60539 in memory of Poncho. Arrangements are under the direction of Haisten Funeral Home of McDonough.
