He was preceded in death by his parents, Roger Alexander Hanger Sr., and Betty Mahan Hanger. His father was in charge of worldwide sales for American Uniform. He is survived by a stepdaughter, Nicole Ayers Leach, step-granddaughter, Ava Grace Leach, brother Roger Alexander Hanger, (wife, Linda), and sister Heidi Hanger Simmonds of Athens, Georgia.
David grew up in downtown Cleveland. For many years, his family lived in the second oldest home in Bradley County, known as “the Hanger House,” which was built by Thomas Callaway circa 1850 and was located at 590 N. Ocoee Street. Callaway was the wealthiest man in Bradley County in the 1850s. The house was later called “the Hardwick House” after it was sold.
He attended Cleveland Day School where he excelled in basketball. He later attended the Darlington School in Rome, Georgia, but eventually returned to Cleveland and graduated from Cleveland High School in 1969. He attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and belonged to the Sigma Chi fraternity. He later attended a school in Michigan for golf professionals. He was an avid fan of the University of Tennessee Volunteers.
David continued to be an avid golfer throughout his life and was a member of Eagles Landing Country Club in Stockbridge, Georgia for more than 25 years. He was also a fly fisherman. His favorite fishing spot was at the Soque River in Habersham County, Georgia. He was a guide for many years on several beautiful streams in Tennessee and Georgia.
