Billy was a man who loved his country and served for 10 years in the United States Army as a Chief Warrant Officer working in military intelligence. During his time in uniform he would be awarded the Vietnam Service Medal with 2 campaign stars, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, 2 overseas bars and the Bronze Star Medal.
Billy would leave active duty at Fort McPherson and remain in Clayton County to begin a 23 year career in Law Enforcement with the Clayton County Sheriff's Department where he would reach the rank of Chief Deputy before retiring. He was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time camping, hunting, and going to the firing range with friends.
Billy's memory will live on through his wife Melinda Graves and children, Tarra Graves, Melanie (Bobby) Piland, Candi (Greg) Hambrick and Brandi Moore, as well as his brother, Charles Graves. He also leaves a legacy in his 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that as a way of showing your love and respect for Billy a donation be made in his name to Veterans Support Group in McDonough, GA or The Gary Sinise Foundation.
