Our precious mother left this world November 27th and passed peacefully into the arms of God. She was a genteel, southern lady, petite in stature but large and strong in her faith, love of family and friends and her thirty year career as a social worker, in which she touched the lives of so many and retired as department supervisor. She brought such love and joy to all she met and her courage and positivity, especially recently as her health declined, were inspiring to all. Born Mary Genrose Swango on December 6th, 1926 in Carrollton, KY, the third of four to Norvin and Mary Ruth and raised on the family farm. She graduated from Transylvania University where she majored in sociology, studied music and was a member of the acappella choir. She later chose a career in social services and was assigned a position in Maysville, Ky. It was there that she met her husband Winn Turner and they raised their three children. She was an elder of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Maysville and very much a pillar of that church throughout her membership, serving on the board and many committees, Christian Women’s fellowship, singing in the choir, and teaching classes. She loved her church and was very dedicated to serving there. Genrose was honored as Woman of the Year in Maysville in 1974. She performed in many musicals, as the lead in a few, presented by the Maysville Players and was a long time member of the Maysville Community Chorus. She was also a member of Maysville Country Club. She enjoyed gardening, golf and loved to read and journal. She had a strong desire to learn and had recently taken classes at Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky. She was a gifted musician and hostess and loved to entertain. Most of all she enjoyed being surrounded by her family who adored her. She leaves a legacy of love in her three children, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister LaVerne Ryan of Carrollton, KY., children Melissa Weaver (Noel), Linda Crush (Bob), and Barton Swango Turner (Becky). Grandchildren, Mary Kathryn Weaver Miller (Eric), Aaron, Nathan (fiancée Gannon Guffy), and Jacob Weaver, Rachel Weaver Potter (Daniel), Caroline Rose, Carson Crush, Olivia and Brody Turner and great grandsons Luke and Jacob Owen.
A Celebration of Life Service for Mrs. Mary Genrose Swango Turner will be Tuesday, December 1, 2015, 11AM, at the First Christian Church in Maysville with Rev. Larry Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Washington Baptist Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday, November 30, 2015, 4-6PM.
