Anne McDuffie Hardymon

Anne Walton McDuffie Hardymon, 91, passed away on January 19, 2012 at the Episcopal Church Home in Louisville, Kentucky. She was born February 21, 1920 in Okolona, Mississippi, the eldest of three children born to the late Howard Woodie and Kathreen Murfee McDuffie. Anne graduated third in her class at Okolona High School. Upon graduation, she attended art school in Nashville, Tennessee that summer and in the fall entered the University of Kentucky. At UK she studied English and Art. Anne joined Kappa Delta social sorority and while attending a party met Glen Hardymon, a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. It was love at first sight. They were married in a college wedding given by her sorority sisters on November 22, 1939 in Lexington. Anne and Glen had four children, Jay Walton, Glenda Kay, Anne and Katherine Leigh. They enjoyed a lively social life and Anne was known for her creativity as well as her cooking and entertaining. Anne also belonged to the Garden Club of Maysville. She was very civic minded, often helping with political campaigns for friends and served one term representing Mason County as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Alumni Association of UK. She often used her talents keeping the statues painted at the Maysville Nativity and doing a pen and ink for the First Christian Church’s bulletin. She did many paintings and portraits, including Maysville’s Supreme Court Justice Stanley Reed and Rosemary Clooney. Glen passed away in 1975 and several years later Anne moved to Lexington, where she studied creative writing and finance at UK. Eventually, she moved to Louisville to be closer to her daughter Anne. In her later years she moved to the Episcopal Church Home, where she entertained everyone with her stories, jokes and piano playing. Anne is survived by her sister Eugenia McDuffie Scruggs of Nashville, Tennessee and was preceded in death by her brother Howard Woodie (Carol) McDuffie, Jr. of Jackson, Mississippi. She is survived by her children, Jay Walton Hardymon (Joyce) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Glenda Kay (“Sissy”) Giles (George) of Stone Mountain, Georgia, Anne Farris (Frank) of Louisville and Katherine Leigh (“Woopsie”) Inglis of Indianapolis, Indiana. Grandchildren are Laura Hardymon Klaes (Brad), Shelley Hardymon Thompson (Bob), Amy Giles Hershberg (Lee), George R. (“Chip”) Giles III (JoAnne), Clay Walton Farris, Elizabeth Hart Farris, Piper Walton Inglis, Lane Erica Inglis and seven great grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Maysville natives Jim Hardymon, Don Little and Jerry Rains and Columbus, Ohio natives Glen Hardymon, Steve Hardymon, Felda Hardymon, David Hardymon and Mark Hardymon. Arrangements are being handled by Knox and Brothers Funeral Home, 625 East Second Street, Maysville, Kentucky. Visitation will be February 4, 2012 at the First Christian Church of Maysville from 10 a.m. to Noon, followed by the funeral service. Memorial donations can be made to the First Christian Church of Maysville, the Episcopal Church Home of Louisville, and the Women’s Philanthropy Fund of the University of Kentucky or the charity of your choice.
