Merv Singer, a beloved patriarch, veteran, entrepreneur, and sports enthusiast, passed away peacefully, on April 18, 2024, at the age of 96. He was surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his parents, Sam Singer and Mollie (nee Salinsky) and his brothers Sidney (Bobbie) and Fred (Betsy). Merv's life was a testament to his devotion to his wife Mary Singer (nee McCarthy), commitment to community service, and the enduring love of family. He is survived by his daughters in Israel, Laurie Singer and Mollie Sachs (Larry). Loving dad to Ellen Barnes Pfiffner (Tim), Kathleen Gaertner, Bink Gaertner, and Pattie Simcic (Michael Wolfe). Grandfather extraordinaire to Lisa Sachs, Aaron Sachs, Megan McKenzie (Rich), Kelly Pfiffner (Stephen Knowles) Erin Gaertner and Mary-Kate Grant (Sean) and Great-grandchildren Adelley MaryTess McKenzie and Peyton McCarthy Grant. Uncle to eight nieces and many great nieces and nephews. His “chosen family,” includes neighbor Derek and Nicole McDowell and children Maebelle and Holden. Born on December 19, 1927, in Pittsburgh, PA, Merv grew up in a world marked by challenge and change. While in high school he played football, baseball and worked in his father’s business. On his eighteenth birthday he enlisted in the army to serve during WWII. After the war Merv enrolled in the University of Pittsburgh to study psychology and business. While in college he was a member of the ROTC. After graduating from college, Merv continued his service in the Army as a First Lieutenant during the Korean War. He was in the 99th FA BN in Japan and then in Europe to support WWII reconstruction. Merv was a patriot and he emerged from his military service with a profound sense of duty to country. After his military service, Merv was the founder of Superior Electronics. The Cleveland business was open for fifty years and was highly regarded by generations of customers. After retirement, Merv and his wife Mary volunteered at the Irish Cultural Festival, served on Mayfield Village committees and supported the JFSA. On the door of Merv and Mary’s home is a sign that says, “Don’t Bother to Knock.” It is where the tea is always on; cherished memories are made, and treasured moments shared.
Whether cheering on his favorite sports team, playing cards, skiing or golfing with friends, Merv's enthusiasm for sports was contagious, bringing joy to all who knew him. Merv will be fondly remembered for his unwavering integrity, compassion, and generosity. His legacy of service, love, and dedication will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to have known him. A celebration of Merv’s life will be held on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at 12 PM at THE DiCICCO AND SONS FUNERAL HOME 5975 MAYFIELD RD. MAYFIELD HTS., OHIO where the family will receive friends 10 AM TO 12 PM. Interment Western Reserve Memorial Gardens. A Celebration of Life luncheon will take place following the Cemetery at THE DiCICCO AND SONS FUNERAL HOME FAMILY CENTER 5975 MAYFIELD RD. MAYFIELD HTS.
