James J. Cuzzo, a devoted family man, proud NYPD retiree, and passionate history enthusiast, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on September 4, 1935, James lived a rich and fulfilling life marked by service, love, and an unwavering commitment to those around him.
James was predeceased by his beloved wife, Eileen, with whom he shared a lifetime of cherished memories. He was a loving father to his seven children: Richard (Lu), Debra (James), John (Debbie), Michael, Kathleen (Scott), Brian (Donna), and Elizabeth. His legacy continued through his 15 cherished grandchildren—James, Michael, Michelle, Jennifer, Kevin, Melissa, Michael, Brian, Anthony, Vincent, Joseph, Erin, Kelly, Kim, and Thomas—and his many beloved great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense joy. He also leaves behind his loving sister, Catherine, and a wide circle of family and friends who will miss him dearly.
After serving 20 years with the New York Police Department, James retired with a deep sense of pride in his contributions to the city he loved. A history buff and Civil War enthusiast, he immersed himself in the past as an active member of the 67th Regiment Infantry of New York and the Society of the Grand Army of the Republic, participating in Civil War reenactments with passion and dedication. He also shared his knowledge as a volunteer docent and tour guide for the Fire Island National Park Services, where he brought history to life for countless visitors.
James had a zest for life’s simple pleasures. He loved to fish, savoring quiet moments by the water, and enjoyed nothing more than gathering with his family over a meal—especially when it concluded with a slice of his favorite apple pie. His great sense of humor lit up any room, and his affection for animals was evident in his love for visiting farms, particularly those with horses, which held a special place in his heart.
James will be remembered for his warmth, his storytelling, and his ability to connect with everyone he met. He will truly be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Funeral arrangements for James will be held at James Funeral Home on Thursday from 4 to 8 PM. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Rose of Lima in Massapequa on Friday at 10 AM, followed by interment at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale, New York.
