Dorothy was born on the family dairy farm in Hilltown, PA. In 1948, she attended Abington Woman's Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, PA. While there, she met her future husband, Vern Green, who was training with the US Navy. After graduation, she traveled to Washington State to marry and make her new home. She raised a family of three daughters in the Lakewood area. She continued her education, eventually earning her B.A. in Nursing from Everett Community College in 1972. She worked for many years as a Registered Nurse at numerous facilities in Snohomish County including; Cascade Valley Hospital, Arlington Convalescent Center, Colby Manor, Virginia Manor and Sunrise View until her retirement at the age of 72. Dorothy was a loving, compassionate woman who continued to take care of others long after she retired. She finally gave up her nurse's license early this year.
Dorothy enjoyed cooking and trying new recipes. Family get-togethers always involved the preparation and sharing of food. She inspired many of her children and grandchildren to become great cooks themselves because of her love of cooking. She was a talented knitter and loved to crochet. She gifted every new baby with a hand knitted blanket and each new family member received a personalized Christmas stocking. She was also an avid bell collector and soap maker. She passed on her love of soap making to her niece, Judy, and her daughters. In later years, she enjoyed the companionship of her beloved miniature dachshund, Gretchen.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Nicholas and Xenia Kurlowich, brother, Alex; and sisters, Natalie, Ann and Julia.
She leaves behind her three daughters, Peggy Green (Earl) of Arlington, WA, Cheryl Starkey of Stanwood, WA and Gail Green (Orlando) of Bremerton, WA; 11 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; along with numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
She also leaves her brother, Nick Kurlowich of Pennsylvania; and special niece and "little sister", Judy Miller (Chuck) of Lake Helen, Florida.
A Celebration of her Life will be held at Schaefer-Shipman Funeral Home, Marysville, WA, Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, a gift of love can be sent in Dorothy's name to: Spiritual Care Department of Providence Regional Center Everett, WA.
