John was born on March 10, 1934, and grew up in Texas, where he developed a love for football and instilled a passion for the Dallas team in his family. He served his country in the United States Army from June 1, 1953, to February 13, 1959, exemplifying dedication and courage.
A devoted family man, John met the love of his life while in the service, and shared 68 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Patricia Sue (Endres) LaGesse. Together, they created a legacy of love, raising five children: Julia Willis (William), Mary Winfield (Charles), Randy (Deneen), Nicole Capron (Kenneth), and John (Maryanne). John was a proud grandfather to 20 grandchildren and a great-grandfather to 21 great-grandchildren.
John had a fulfilling career at Dupont Chambers Works, where his dedication and hard work left a lasting impact. Outside of work, he coached midget league football, demonstrating his commitment to nurturing the potential of young athletes.
Community service was also a significant part of John's life. He served as the past president of the Pennsville Jaycee's and later became the President of the Citizens Observation Patrol in Spanish Lakes Fairways, Ft Pierce, FL. His dedication to community safety earned him recognition from the St Lucie County Sheriffs Dept.
John's legacy extended beyond his professional and community achievements. He was known for his intelligence, problem-solving skills, and boundless patience. His love for logic puzzles, card games, and storytelling brought joy to his family. Summers spent fishing off the dock, playing poker, and learning life lessons were cherished moments for those fortunate enough to share them with him.
To his family, John was more than a patriarch; he was a source of wisdom, guidance, and unwavering support. His mischievous streak, love for family, and 60+ years of a happy marriage were testaments to a life well-lived.
In honor of John Cornelius LaGesse's remarkable life, we celebrate the legacy of a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the eternal love and gratitude of those whose lives he touched.
A celebration of life will be held on April 13, 2024 at noon at 4089 Kerns Church Rd, Sutherlin, VA 24594.
