Jesse was born on August 10, 1932, to Jesse Irvin Shumate, Sr. and Elma Lee Love Shumate. He was preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife of 63 years, Jane S. Shumate.
Jesse is survived by his brother, James Wesley Shumate (Carol), of Burlington, NC.
He was a graduate of Martinsville High School and attended Bluefield College and Virginia Polytechnic Institute. After college Jesse joined the Army and served for 2 years.
Jesse was a member of First Baptist Church of Martinsville and the Elks Lodge #1752 in Martinsville.
Along with the love of his life, Jane, his next love was fishing, gardening and his many beach trips. He was a very kind man who never met a stranger. Jesse will be missed by all that knew him.
A service will be held at a later date.
