In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Norma R. “Kitty” Talley; brothers, Alfred G. Reed, Charles E. “Barney” Reed and E. Nelson Reed; his son, Stephen Reed.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Norma Pendleton Reed; son, David Reed (Michele); grandsons, Will and Ben Reed; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Jan attended Lynchburg College for 2 years and joined the Air Force where he worked as a weather observer. After serving in the military for four years he started and owned the original Jan’s Dutch Boy restaurant. Five years later, he sold the business and went back to finish his education at Lynchburg College.
Following graduation, he began working as a juvenile probation officer for the 21st Judicial Court District. He retired from the court system 29 years later while working as the Juvenile Court Director.
He had a great love for hiking. In addition to many local hikes with his family and friends, Jan and his son, David, hiked the entire 26 miles of the Grand Canyon when Jan was 75 years of age and again on his 80th birthday.
Jan was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir for many years. He was also active in the Lions Club.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at Roselawn Burial Park with Pastors Faith Weedling and Ron Mateer officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 146 East Main Street, Martinsville, Va.
