He was born in Leakesville, NC, May 5, 1927 and came to Fieldale in 1936. His parents were Hubert Ziegler Smith and Leone Eggleston Smith, both deceased. He was a graduate of Fieldale High School and served in the Navy during WW II. He attended Lynchburg College and received his business degree from Virginia Tech in 1951. Hubert worked for Goldston Motor Lines in Winston Salem, NC where he was Terminal Manager and later was a dispatcher for Roy Stone Transfer Company. He retired from Stanley Furniture Company where he was Warehouse Superintendent for 30 years. Hubert was a life-long member of Broad Street Christian Church where he was a Deacon and Elder. He was also a former member of Martinsville Exchange Club, former officer of Oakwood Cemetery Association, former member of Piedmont Arts where he served in installing shows; former member of Chatmoss Country Club and was an active member of Boy Scouts.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Bernice Hodges Smith of the residence; one son, James Hubert Smith, Jr. of Lake Norman in Sherrills Ford, NC; one brother, Dr. John Randolph Smith of Martinsville and three grandchildren, Elizabeth Ashley Smith, Whitney Nicole Smith and James Michael Smith, all of Sherrills Ford, NC; two nieces, Jane S. Dodd and husband, Kenneth of Blacksburg, VA, Ann Ziegler Smith of Martinsville; two nephews, John Randolph Smith of Richmond, James Edward Smith and wife, Martha of Rock Hill, SC.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at 11:00 am at Broad Street Christian Church with the Rev. Dr. Clint Spivey and the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 25, 2012 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Martinsville and other times at the residence.
