James Randolph Smith Jr.

James Randolph “Randy” Smith, Jr., 79, of Martinsville, Va. passed away on Tuesday, March 12, 2024. He was born in Martinsville March 7, 1945 to the late Dr. James Randolph Smith, Sr. and Ruth Boydkins Smith. He is survived by his cousins, Dr. John R. Smith, Jane Clark Moorman and J. Hubert Smith, Jr. Randy was a graduate of Martinsville High School, Randolph-Macon College and later graduated first in his class from UVA School of Law. Early in his legal career he worked as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney under Martinsville Commonwealth’s Attorney John Hartley. Following Hartley’s retirement, Randy was elected Martinsville Commonwealth’s Attorney where he served many terms. He was later appointed by Governor Jim Gilmore to work in the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, as well as the Virginia Department of Charitable Gaming Commission. Following his service in Richmond, he returned to Henry County where he served as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney from 2002 until 2015. Following his retirement from Henry County, he continued to serve as an Assistant Commonwealth Attorney when needed in Martinsville, Henry and Patrick County. Randy was well known for his deep and vast knowledge of the law and was often referred to as a walking codebook. He was a member of Martinsville Rotary Club and lifelong faithful member of Broad Street Christian Church. He loved his church and also enjoyed spending time at Kill Devil Hills. A visitation will be held from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm on Monday, March 18, 2024 at Broad Street Christian Church. A funeral service will follow and will be officiated by the Rev. Ron Mateer. A private interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Broad Street Christian Church, 106 Broad Street, Martinsville, Va.
