Born January 17, 1937 in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of the late Homer William Hess, Sr. and Anna Verona Hess.
Darlene was a fifty-nine year member of Pikeside United Methodist Church in Martinsburg. She was a legal secretary in Martinsburg before becoming a mother. She served her church as a Sunday school teacher for over thirty years. Darlene enjoyed baking, cooking, and loved traveling to the shore with friends and family. She was a dedicated wife of 59 years to the late Gerald “Gerry” Snapp Effland.
She is survived by her children, Gerald “Jay” Effland, Jr. and his significant other, Karen Fickes of Enola, Pennsylvania, Cathy Butler and her husband, Mark of Inwood, and Daniel “Danny” Effland and his wife, Mary of Hedgesville; seven grandchildren: Joshua Effland of San Diego, California, Lacy Effland Hockman of Martinsburg, Taylor Effland of Bunker Hill, Alyssa Butler of Orlando, Florida, Denver Effland of Spring Mills, Sawyer Effland of Kearneysville, and Jordan Effland and his wife of Hedgesville; and one brother, Homer “Sonny” W. Hess, Jr. of Martinsburg.
Friends will be received on Thursday, March 7, 2019 6pm-8pm at Rosedale Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held with Pastor Bill Ball officiating on Friday, March 8, 2019 at 11am at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Rosedale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pikeside United Methodist Church.
