Born on October 20, 1936 in Moorefield, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Mabel Crites Helmick.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Elma Frame; step-son, Glenn Wilhelm; and step-daughter, Tonya Wilhelm Norris.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Beverly (Boltz Wilhelm) Helmick; his sons: Mike Helmick and wife Mary, and Randy Helmick; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Vernon graduated from Martinsburg High School, Class of 1955. He was a member of Arden United Methodist Church.
