Mike was born on September 8, 1952 in Ashland, KY to the late Eldon and Hazel (Allen) Chaffin. He graduated from Boyd County High School in 1971. After high school, he enlisted with the United States Army and served from 1972 to 1975, stationed in South Korea for most of his military career. He was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration and retired after 33 years of service.
Mike was always proud of where he came from. He valued his southern heritage, being born and raised “in the holler” back in Catlettsburg, Ky. He will always be a country boy at heart with a loving Southern spirit who always treasured the simple things in life. He loved warm weather and would often escape into the woods on his 4 wheeler to visit his “thinking spot” which he described as a peaceful, quiet place, where he could listen to the sounds of nature. He enjoyed many outdoor activities, like camping, fishing, and hunting.
In addition to his quiet time, he cherished family time. In his last days, he ate some of his favorite meals, spent time with family, and shared memorable conversations with his loved ones. According to him, he would want to be remembered as the best lookin’, best smellin’, most intelligent man around.
He will be sadly missed by his wife of 16 years Denise Chaffin, daughter LeAnne Richardson and son-in-law Tom Richardson, daughter Tara Michelle Hamm, daughter Natasha Nunez, son Juan “Tito” Nunez, and daughter Kaitlyn Nunez, four grandchildren; Tia Blevins, Courtney Clark, Kaylee Richardson, Alaina Richardson two great-grandchildren Tori and Tanner Blevins; one sister, Sherry “Sissy” Stevens and brother-in-law Dave Stevens, one brother, Danny Chaffin and sister in law Debbie Chaffin; and several loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Edgar Allen “Pa”, and Rose Allen “Ma”, paternal grandparents Riley and Della Chaffin; his brother Timothy “Tim” Chaffin; his daughter, Tracy Ann Chaffin; and grandson Grayson Carter Nunez.
Dad would always repeat a traditional bedtime saying that he learned from his grandpa, Paw. He would want us to remember, “It’s time for the Paw Paws to Paw and eaves drops to drop gently as the oleee cow slips away”
Friends will be received on Monday from 6-8pm at Rosedale Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday at 11am at the funeral home. Interment will be in Rosedale Cemetery.
