Born in Weston, WV on October 9, 1924, she was the daughter of Robert S. and Mary Elizabeth (Bird)
Martin. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Robert, David, William, James and John Martin; sisters: Roberta Knox, Harriett Grady and Joan Browning; her husband, Bernard Esman; father of her children, Floyd Custer; and her oldest grandchild Richard Custer.
Surviving her are her children: Richard F. Custer, Gilmor H. Custer (Joan), Joyce McMillan, James N. Custer (Margy), William B. Custer (Linda) and Beth Creek (David); stepdaughters: Dava and Jo Phyllis; grandchildren: Kelly Gaucher, Scott Custer, Rob Custer, Sean McMillan, Terryn Spencer, Angela Johnson, Jennifer Piccioni, Anna Singh, Luke Custer, Jeremiah Custer, Sarah Bennett, Julie DuVall and Aaron Creek;
thirty-one great-grandchildren and twelve great-great-grandchildren.
Martha was a homemaker in Oakland, MD and then in Flintstone, MD. She was a Boy Scout den mother and active in PTA. She worked at several department stores in Cumberland MD, then studied and became an interior designer at Hafer Furniture store, May Co in Cleveland, OH, in Pittsburgh and then finally in Ft. Lauderdale FL at Burdines.
She enjoyed traveling, her favorite trip was Jerusalem. She loved to drive and was always looking for a new place to explore. Martha was famous for her bean soup and oatmeal cookies. She moved back to Western MD to be closer to her family and was a resident at Keyser Healthcare Nursing Home at the time of her death.
A Memorial Service will be held at 12pm on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at LaVale Baptist Church with Pastor Jim Jeffries officiating.
