Born Sept. 28, 1959, in Frederick, Md., he was the son of Barbara L. Harshman and the late Lloyd L. Harshman, Sr.
Carroll was a graduate of Jefferson High School, class of 1978. After graduation, he moved to southern California where he raised a family and worked as a firefighter at Van Nuys Airport in the San Fernando Valley. He also received his commercial pilot's license and was a flight instructor at Glendale Community College, Glendale, Calif.
Carroll proudly served his country with a military career that began in the Air National Guard 167th Airlift Wing, Martinsburg, WV and continued with his work as a Tech. Sgt. for the U.S. Air Force Reserve 4th Combat Camera Squadron at March Air Reserve Base in Riverside, Calif. He served two tours in Iraq and was also deployed to Djibouti, Africa from 2006-2007 as part of a Combined Joint Task Force—Horn of Africa mission. He received several awards and recognition for his military service.
Carroll had retired within the last few years to Thailand, living among the people and places that he enjoyed so much. He traveled home to California and West Virginia frequently to spend time with his loved ones.
He was a Christian and had a deep, abiding faith.
Surviving along with his mother, of Charles Town, are two sons, Jason Harshman and wife, Amy, of Burbank, Calif.; Adam Harshman and fiancée, Amber Nemick, of Chatsworth, Calif.; a brother, Lloyd L. "Skip" Harshman, Jr. of Bunker Hill, WV; two sisters, Linda A. Nicodemus of Mt. Jackson, Va., and Sharon L. Snyder and husband, Charles, of Bunker Hill; a granddaughter, Riley May Harshman and a nephew, Evan M. Snyder.
Carroll loved camping, lying outside under the stars, rafting down the Kern and Shenandoah Rivers, riding his bicycle to Harpers Ferry, flying airplanes, playing with his granddaughter, peaches from the local fruit stand, eating home cooked meals while spending time with family and going on his daily morning motorcycle rides in Thailand. Carroll loved life and lived it to the fullest. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Rosedale Chapel in Martinsburg, with the Rev. Sharon Bourgeois officiating. Burial will be private.
