William J. Miranda, 93, of Evans, Georgia, passed away Monday, October 19, 2015, in Augusta, Georgia with his family by his side. Born and raised in New Rochelle, New York on April 6, 1922, to Joseph and Ercolina (Gatti) Miranda, “Bill” served proudly as a policeman in the New Rochelle Police Department for 25 years and for 15 years with the New York Telephone Company. He married the love of his life, Carmela (Petruzziello) on March 14, 1948, and they raised their children, Carol Ann McDonald, Lucille (Steven) Tiernan, and William J. Miranda, Jr. After 52 years of marriage, Carmela passed away in August 10, 2010 in Augusta. Bill was preceded in death also by his brother, Joseph Miranda. Survivors include his three children; his sister, Alice De Santis; his four grandchildren, Ryan (Jennifer) McDonald, Marc (Rachel) McDonald, Kimberly (Michael) Armstrong, and Sean (Lauren) Tiernan; and nine great grandchildren, Madison Ann Sams, Logan Thomas McDonald, Mara Katharine McDonald, Ava Catherine McDonald, Benjamin William McDonald, Audrey Grace McDonald, Maris Ann Tiernan, Genevieve Clare McDonald, and Miles Stuntz.
In his lifetime, Bill was a member of the Elks, Casa Calabria, Knights of Columbus, N.Y. State P.B.A., and American Legion Post 192. He held office as the President of the New Rochelle P.B.A, State Treasurer of the New York State P.B.A. He attended Mt. Manresa Jesuit retreats for many years.
Bill served proudly in both WWII and the Korean War as a staff sergeant. His service included the Army Air Corp, the Army, and the Air Force from 1942-1953. He was a recipient of numerous military awards including European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and Ribbon; Good Conduct Medal; and Distinguished Unit Badge; and WWII Victory Medal and Ribbon.
Above all, Bill was most proud and honored by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He impressed upon them the importance of an education, honesty in all things, and a sense of family.
Viewing will take place on Wednesday, October 21, 2015, 6 to 8 pm at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, 4255 Columbia Road, Martinez, Georgia 30907. A church service will be conducted by Deacon Ken Maleck of St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church on Thursday, October 22, 2015 at 11 am at the funeral home. Entombment will follow at Westover Memorial Park Mausoleum, Augusta, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to American Legion Post 192, 275 Legion Road, Evans, Georgia 30809.
