Louis Saul, 86, of Augusta, GA passed into eternal rest on Saturday, June 24th, 2023 at Augusta University Hospital. Lou, as he was known by everyone, was the son of Kalmon and Hannah Saul. He was born March 12th, 1937 and lived his entire life in Augusta. He was predeceased by his brother, Jerry Saul, and sister, Maxine Saul Goldberg. In 1958, Lou married the love of his life, Elaine Cohen of Charleston, SC, and they were happily married for 65 years.
Lou was educated in the Richmond County School System and graduated from Richmond Academy in 1955. While attending the University of Georgia, he participated in the ROTC program, was a member of the Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity, and graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor of Business Degree. Lou then received his Juris Doctorate Law degree from the UGA School of Law in 1961. He was an instructor in the UGA Business School and later at Augusta College. He was admitted to the Georgia Bar and the US Federal District Court, including the 4th, 5th, & 11th circuits in 1961.
Soon after, Lou began his legal career clerking for Judge Oliver Mixon. He was then called to active duty by the United States Army in 1962. He served at Fort McClellan, Alabama in the Quartermaster Corp, and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal as a 1st Lieutenant in 1964.
After returning from the Army, Lou resumed his legal career, and was admitted into the United States Supreme Court in 1968. He then went on to specialize in bankruptcy law with a thriving practice for 56 years. He was a member of the Commercial Law League, American Bankruptcy Institute, and the ABA/Georgia Bar Association. Lou was appointed Special Master in the US District Court and the Superior Court, and a Trustee in the US Bankruptcy Court of the Southern District. He was the longest standing member of the West Augusta Rotary Club for 42 years and received the Paul Harris Fellow Recognition. Everyone knew Lou as the most avid Georgia Bulldog fan. As a member of the Augusta Georgia Bulldog Club, he would travel with his friends in his 1977 Winnebago to see his 'dawgs' play. He loved boating & fishing at Clarks Hill Lake and playing golf with the Irish Mafia at The Patch.
Lou was a lifelong member of the Adas Yeshurun Synagogue, Chabad of Augusta, and the Jewish Community Center and Federation of Augusta.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine Saul, his daughter, Jean Saul Jackson (Gary), and son, Brian M. Saul (Lainie), and four grandsons, Isadore Jackson, Aaron Jackson, Marc Saul, and Jack Saul. Lou was a loving and devoted son, brother, husband, father, uncle, and grandfather.
Lou was a man of integrity- he was genuine, sincere, and caring. He lived a life of helping others and was admired by all who knew him. A life well lived; he will remain in our hearts and minds forever.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, June 26th, 2023, 2:00PM at Magnolia Cemetery, 702 3rd Street, Augusta, GA 30901.
Pallbearers will be Isadore Jackson, Aaron Jackson, Marc Saul, Jack Saul, Gary Jackson, Larry Goldberg, Jerold Slesinger, and Kevin Cohen. Arrangements by Elliott Sons Funeral Home (706-868-9637).
