A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 with the family receiving friends 1 hour prior to the service at Elliott Sons Funeral Home Columbia Rd. with Reverend Ellis Moore officiating. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at 1 p.m. in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Savannah.
Evelyn was born on July 11, 1930, to Marion and Lillian DeWitt in Savannah, Georgia, where she spent her youth. It was during those years in Savannah while attending different schools and in college she became a part of an all-girls club called the “KNITWITS”. They enjoyed fun social get-togethers and laughter as they knitted argyle patterned socks. To this day, the “KNITWITS” have kept in touch with one another of a lifetime of enduring friendships.
Evelyn met her future husband Gene, her soulmate, at the time he and her were employed at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. He was the club golf pro and she was a personal assistant to Clifford Roberts. A sparkle of friendship ensued and blossomed into a marriage on March 11, 1967, that lasted 22 years.
Gene and Evelyn lovingly raised 5 children together; Tom (Patricia), Cheryl (Greg), Susan, (Brian), Steve, and Elizabeth (Grant). In addition to their children, they have 11 grandchildren; Kelsey, Taylor, Keith, Joey, Nathan, Jacob, Jason, Alan, Renee, Tyler, and Chloe. And there are 13-great-grandchildren.
Evelyn was a devoted mother to their children, and a loyal wife and co-worker to her husband’s Gene’s numerous head golf professional jobs. Among the many locations Evelyn Lived and plied her trade as a highly skilled bookkeeper were; Bahama Reef Golf and Country Club in Freeport, Grand Bahama Island; Country Club of Miami In Miami, Florida; Inverrary Golf and Country Club in Lauderhill, Florida; The Hamlet Golf Club in Delray Beach, Florida; and Melrose Golf Club, in Daufuskie Island, South Carolina.
Evelyn Volunteered for many years at the Tybee Island Lighthouse on Tybee Island, Georgia. She was a talented artist and painter, avid reader, an amazing cook, loved the beach, a whiz at solving crossword puzzles.
The expression of the smile on her graceful face brought an everlasting joy and inspiration and blessing to her children, family, and friends that will be greatly missed, though always remembered. She, too, faithfully taught her children valuable life lessons that she will always be proud of.
