Betty Frances Hearne Dodd (88) born at home in a small rural community in Delmar, Delaware died on 3/28/2011. Her Mother was a school teacher and Father was a business contractor and farmer. A country girl in those days was stereotyped as the less popular by the town crowd. She went to a small country school for two years, where seven grades were incorporated in a one-room school. In the third grade she went to a town school where everyone attended all twelve grades at the same school. After graduation, she went to the University of Delaware and graduated in 1943 with a BS degree in Physical Education and science.
After college she taught school in the town of Laurel, Delaware for two years as a Physical Education Instructor, Coach and Science Teacher. She then attended an Army-sponsored course in Battlecreek, MI to major in Physical Therapy, after which she was commissioned as First Lt. in the Army. She spent six years in the service, three of which were in the Air Force and was discharged with the grade of Captain. In the military, she was stationed at New York City (Staten Island), Miami Beach (Pratt General Hospital), San Francisco (Letterman Hospital) and Chief of the PT Clinic at Barksdale Field in Louisiana. Following discharge she worked for the VA in San Francisco, CA.
Married to a military man, she had three children, and did extensive travelling as a military dependent for twelve years to include Texas, California, Germany and finally Fort Gordon, Georgia. She then worked for the Federal Government at Eisenhower Hospital as a Physical Therapist for 45 years. She retired in 2002 with and continued to work as a contract therapist, specifically with amputees, for five more years totaling 50 years of Federal service.
She was a Life Member of the Eastern Star, member of NARFE, RAMSCA, associate member of the Alumni Association, and served on committees for several private associations. She was an avid reader and traveled extensively to Europe, Japan, the UK, Mediterranean countries, Panama Canal, Alaska, Scandinavian countries and the National Parks. Hobbies included reading, gardening, handcrafts and bowling.
She is survived by three children, William Dodd of Acworth, GA, Betty Ann Dodd of Hephzibah, GA, and Darryl Green of Hendersonville, NC. Also survived by three grandchildren, Jason Green, Robert Jowers and Jon Paul Jowers. Husband Arnold R. Dodd Jr., deceased, retired Military.
Services will be held 3:00 pm Saturday, 4/2/2011, at Elliott Sons Funeral Home on Columbia Road. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Fort Gordon Fisher House, Bldg 280, Fisher House Rd., Ft. Gordon, GA 30905.
