Great surgical teacher and devoted husband and father and a joy to chat with once a month or so. Still provided support and mentorship later into my career. Miss him

I am so sorry to just read this. He has been on my mind and I tried his cell today and found myself on this site. Dr. Smith was a very dear colleague and encourager. I have so many fond memories of him. He was a great man with a tremendous impact on many. He will be missed. My condolences to the family.

So sorry for your loss.   Worked with Dr. Smith for many years in the OR at AU. What a brilliant and kind man he was.

Art was a gifted surgeon and teacher who was also a mentor and friend.  He expected and demanded the best from his residents in the clinic and the operating room. He was a gifted Socratic teacher to me throughout my years in Augusta. As I rose in academics he became a trusted mentor and advisor.
