He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Irene Auclair Wareing Shepard as well as his three children, Gerald, Lewis, and Debra, and two stepchildren, Susan and Jean; his brother, Raymond Shepard. Al also has many grandchildren and great grandchildren whom he loved dearly.
Mr. Shepard was born and raised in New Bedford, Massachusetts on May 16th, 1930. After graduating from trade school, he worked for Morse Cutting Tools. He began his career as a foreman and later retired as vice president after 40 years. Al was active in sports and leadership. While living in New England, he had a passion for tennis and bowling. He gained recognition as a highly ranked player and a national duckpin bowler. Al moved to Georgia in 1988 where he quickly became a leader in the tennis community and throughout the state. He served as a USTA official and deputy referee for more than 30 years. As President of the CSRA tennis, he received the lifetime achievement award for his many years of service and dedication. His love for tennis was also inspired by traveling the national circuit with his loving and talented Irene. Al will be greatly missed by his wife, family, friends, and tennis community.
There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, September 14th at 2:00 p.m. at Martinez Baptist Church, 3632 River Watch Parkway.
