Loving husband of Margaret Dunham Cooney and son of the late Edward and Anna Cooney; preceded in death by Brothers Edward (Lurlyn), Jules (Emily), Joseph (Myrtle) and James Cooney, brother-in-law to the late Roy and Dolores Neely. Brother in law of Julie Mae Cooney, Roy, Danny, William and Dorothy Dunham.
He was the father of Bridget Roberts (Gary), Connie Roberts (Bruce), Gail Duncan-DePhillips (Clyde), Raynel Zimmer (David), Maureen Cortez (Chadd), Mark Cooney (Fay) and Dana Cooney.

Also, he was survived by a host of nieces and nephews; especially close to Mary Klein, Sheila Allen and Rosemary Arriaga. He was Godfather to Michael Cooney.
Mr. Cooney joined the US Navy at an early age and served on the USS San Marco, the USS Artemus, the USS Benevolence and the USS Juneau during World War II. He toured Europe as a goodwill gesture and he also participated in the atomic bomb test at Bikini Atoll. He received the World War II Victory Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal and the United States Armed Forces Honor Medal from Louisiana. After being honorably discharged from the Air Force where he served as a radio repairman in Colorado, he returned to his home.
Soon after he returned he met the love of his life and they were married for 56 years.
He was a popular coach and mentor at Terrytown Playground and still is remembered fondly today by Mossy, Donnie, Greg, Carey, Wade and a host of others.
He was a past commander of the American Legion post 378, a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post 3121, and a member of the Terrytown Lions Club.
In lieu of flowers donations to Alzheimer’s Association, Alz.org, for Alzheimer’s research; America’s Heroes, americasherosnola.com, or St. Michael's Special School, stmichaelspecialschool.com, in Mr. Cooney's name would be appreciated.
Visitation will be held at Westside/Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home in Marrero on Sunday, June 7, 2015 from 6 pm to 9 pm. Visitation will also be held on Monday, June 8, 2015 from 10 am – 11 am, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at Christ the King Church in Terrytown. Graveside services will be at Westlawn Cemetery immediately following the Mass Service.
