Vernell Mills

Vernell Mills, age 90, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at home with her family by her side. Graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Mart Cemetery in Mart, Texas with Reverend Mark Pedersen officiating. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Mart Cemetery.

Vernell was born January 22, 1934, to Elmer and Artie (Cotton) Stone in Big Hill, Texas. She married Marvin “Tuffy” Mills on December 30, 1950, in Otto, Texas. Vernell was a longtime resident of Falls County, Texas where she was a homemaker for many years, taking care of her husband and four sons. She later worked at the sewing factory in Marlin, Texas and in the cafeteria at Mart ISD. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and quilting. If you ask anyone in the family, they will tell you that her fried chicken was “The BEST!”

Vernell was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Marvin, sons, Milton Wayne (Todd) Mills, David Glen Mills, and Jerry Don Mills.

Survivors include her son, Rickey Mills and wife, Donna of Marlin, brothers, Nelson Stone of Cameron, Gene Stone of Mart, and Joe Walts, Jr., of San Antonio; granddaughters, Kaci Womack, Keri Mills, and Nicole Mills, and grandson, Geoff Mills, two great-granddaughters, and special friend and caretaker, Mary Schmedthorst.
