Roger Len Drews, 74, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, November 7, 2022 in Marlin, Texas. Funeral service will be Saturday, November 12, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church with The Reverend Kurt Rutz officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 11, 2022 at Adams Funeral Home.
Roger was born on September 24, 1948 to Edmund Fred and Martha (Niemeyer) Drews in Marlin, and remained a lifelong resident. Roger graduated from Marlin High School in 1967 and married the love of his life, Maria Hughes on February 15, 1969. He was a committed member of Grace Lutheran Church, where he served on many committees and was an elder for more than 40 years.
Roger was a passionate and dedicated community servant and his greatest love was the Falls County Youth Fair. He worked tirelessly for 45+ years for the 4-H and FFA youth of his county by serving on the board of directors since the early 1980s. Long after his own children were grown, he spent the majority of his time improving the Youth Fair programs and facilities. He was also an active member of the Marlin Men’s Civic Association and Falls County Go-Texans and was the most recent recipient of the Outstanding Citizen of the Year award, given by the Marlin Chamber of Commerce. He also served as the lamb superintendent at the Heart of Texas Fair, the weighmaster on the lamb committee for the State Fair of Texas and the Falls County Go-Texan ambassador to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for many years.
Roger was employed by the Texas Department of State Health Services as a Meat Inspector for 40 years and more recently served as a Compliance & Enforcement Specialist for the Meat Compliance and Investigations Division. He was born into a farming and ranching family, so he stayed true to his roots in agriculture through all aspects of his life. He loved to entertain and had the true gift of hospitality. Besides volunteering, Roger enjoyed freshwater and saltwater fishing and spending time with his family, especially his 5 grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Jimmy Drews and brother-in-law, Gordon Voges.
