Weldon was such a cool guy, he was practically a local celebrity. To know him was to love, respect, admire (or maybe fear) him for his charm, quick wit, direct manner, sharp tongue, fearlessness and strength. He kept everyone laughing, and a little on edge waiting to see what he might say next.
He was a patriot and warrior, having served his country in the US Army, US Navy and National Guard. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and recipient of numerous medals and commendations, including two Bronze Stars. He said his service on the Ticonderoga was a highlight in his life.
An imposing 6’3” and fierce, Weldon was always willing to use his physical advantages to protect the underdog. The thing he hated most in life was a bully. Those he helped, never forgot his impact on their lives.
It wasn’t just men who respected him or ladies who desired him, he was even popular with animals. He was a big softie who loved animals, especially dogs. A reformed hunter, he spent the last years of his life providing a buffet for the birds and deer and was always delighted to see them come for their supper.
Weldon loved collecting guns and playing golf. He took up golf later in life and with natural athletic ability, became formidable on the course. He was especially proud of his “hole in one.”
Weldon was also known for his keen fashion sense, though his style changed dramatically over the years. Once styled as a burly redneck, he was a refined golf gentleman in later years. He was always groomed and perfumed with outfits carefully coordinated down to the shoes.
Weldon loved his family. The only fears he ever expressed in his long life were in his final days about leaving them. He is survived by his wife, Suzi Reneau. He also leaves behind 4 children: Michael Wade Reneau, James Randall Reneau, Lisa Reneau, and Laurie Smith; 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
A celebration of life memorial will be held at 11:30 a.m., September 10, 2022, at Adams Funeral Home in Marlin.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to American Legion Post 31 to support local veterans.
