William Howard “Coach” Wilson, age 83 of Marion, NC passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at Burke Hospice, 1715 Enon Road, Valdese, NC with his family by his side. He was born on March 3, 1930 to the late Mr. Jay William Wilson and Mrs. Mae Womick Wilson of Rutherford, NC. He was employed by various public school systems in several surrounding counties serving as football coach, assistant principle which encompassed more than 40 years of service . He loved kids and his family and was instrumental in all of his family meeting their educational goals. Everyone knew him as Coach “Teddy Bear” Wilson.
Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his parents; spouse Betty Jean Wilson, sons; Eugene Wilson (Spud), Donnie Wilson, Joseph (Joey) Wilson; daughter Rebecca Davis and a brother Rev. Donald Wilson.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bonnie Wilson of the home, sons Terry Wilson and wife Brenda of Hickory, Ronnie Wilson of Statesboro, Ga, Derrick Wilson of Hendersonville, Robert Womick and wife Diane of Marion, Jerry Womick and wife Melisa of Nebo, David Womick and wife Bebe of Winchester, Va., and Rev. Daniel Womick and wife Barbara of Marion. He is survived by one daughter Megan Serzan and husband Chris of Johnson City, Tenn.
Two brothers survive Coach Wilson; Glenn Wilson and wife Camella of Hickory, NC and Bob Wilson and wife Bernice of Marion. One sister survives; Edith Edwards and husband S.J. of Marion. He is survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Coach Wilson will be conducted on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 beginning at 2:00 PM at Cross Memorial Baptist Church with the Revs. Doug Prevett, Danel Womick and Ronnie Owens officiating the service.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at McCall Kirksey Chapel in Marion, NC.
Burial will follow the services at Cross Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery following the funeral services on Wednesday with military rites provided by the U.S. Navy.
