Debra Smith Petty died on October 18 at Blue Ridge Hospital in Morganton. She was born April 8, 1952 in Old Fort to Robert V. and Doris Lackey Smith, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband of two years, Steve Petty of Marion, a brother, Bob Smith (Linda) of Old Fort, a sister, Patti Smith Holda of Old Fort, three nephews, one niece, and four great nieces. She is also survived by one uncle, Z.L. “Buck” Lackey (Margaret), and Elaine McPherson, all of Asheville, and Carolyn Hipps Brown (Jack) of Black Mountain, and numerous cousins.
Debbie graduated from Old Fort High class of 1970, and Appalachian State University, and received her Master’s degree with National Louis University. She taught the very first Kindergarten class at Old Fort Elementary, and then taught with Dept. of Defense Dependent Schools in Germany for twenty-six years, and in Seoul, South Korea for five years. She enjoyed life, making many friends and traveling through many countries. After retiring, she moved back to Old Fort, remaining active with her church, Old Fort UMC, NC Cooperative Extension, Friends of the Library, and the Mountain Glory Quilters Guild. Deb had always been artistic, and her creativity showed in her many quilts. She especially loved children, and enjoyed doing educational craft projects with her nieces and nephews when they were young, also inspiring a new generation of teachers.
A memorial service is planned at Old Fort United Methodist Church for Saturday, October 26 at 2PM with Pastor Kimberly Baker officiating, visitation will follow. A private family committal will take place at a later date at Bethlehem Community Cemetery.
