Wendell Bennett Byars, age 84 of Aiken, South Carolina passed away on Saturday, August 26, 2023 at Wellstar Tranquility Hospice, Austell, Ga. A native of Aiken, Wendell was born on January 16, 1939 to the late John Bernell Byars and Inez Youngblood Byars of Windsor, SC.
A avid fisherman, hunter and community leader, Wendell was instrumental in the founding of numerous volunteer fire departments though out Aiken County. Most notably was his involvement with Couchton Fire and Rescue where he served faithfully for over 50 years. He was a member of Couchton Baptist Church and in later years attended his boyhood church, Windsor First Baptist. Wendell was also a member in good standing with Aiken Masonic Lodge #156. Community involvement was extremely important to Wendell which included his assistance with Battle of Aiken/Historical reenactment along with serving many years with the American Red Cross, traveling to various states and counties helping when disaster struck. He and his late wife Helen were owners and operators of Juanita Mobile Home Park, taking over full responsibilities with the passing of his wife in 2009. During his working career, He worked and retired from Garrett Aviation at Bush Field in Augusta, GA which is now part of Honeywell Aerospace.
Wendell is survived by his six children, Juanita Byars Bell (Kenneth), John Wendell Byars (Tammy), Robert Samuel Byars (Roxanne), Daniel Lester Byars (James), Alicia “Lisa” Rhinehart, Dave Edward Byars; seventeen grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson; siblings: Elspye Johnson, Myra Ridgeway (Brooke), John Edward Byars (Karen); many cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents Wendell is preceded in death by his wife Helen Fulmer Byars; sisters, Beverly Jean Byars, Mary Lou Gray; brother, Wayne Thomas Byars.
A visitation for Wendell will be held Sunday, September 3, 2023 from 1:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Couchton Baptist Church, 3171 Wagener Road, Aiken, SC 29801 Burial will be a private committal service.
