V. James “Jim” Schutz, Jr., age 81, of Marietta, GA, passed away on February 13, 2024. He was born on February 14, 1942 to Vernon J. Schutz, Sr. and Alethia DeAngelis Schutz. Jim grew up in Baltimore with his five siblings and graduated from Loyola College of Baltimore with a degree in accounting. In 1969, Jim married Marjorie Bounds and raised two sons, Jim and JohnPaul.
Jim spent 26 years at IBM before his first retirement. After a short break, Jim, who owned several rental homes, pursued an interest in real estate and became a real estate agent for over twenty years, primarily focusing on helping young first-time home buyers. During those years, and for his twelve years of actual retirement, Jim was an avid duplicate bridge player at the Cobb County Mountain View Senior Center, where he could be found several days a week.
Throughout his life, Jim enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family. Over the course of many family road trips, he trapsed through 48 states and countless national parks. Later, he and his wife Marjie enjoyed several cruises and traveled to Europe to visit his maternal homeland of Italy. No trip was truly underway until Willie Nelson’s classic “On the Road Again” was played (and sung) as the family took off in the station wagon.
Jim and his family also spent many weekends at the family lake house on Lake Hartwell. In the early days, the family enjoyed a tiny cabin with no air conditioning, an intermittent well, and a leaking roof, and hosted an annual lake trip with beloved friends from Marriage Encounter. In later years, Jim and Marjie custom designed a house built to host family gatherings. Through it all, many joyous days were spent with kids, grandkids, and friends out on the lake.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Alethia Schutz. He is survived by his wife Marjie Schutz; sons and daughters-in-law Jim & Joselyn Schutz and JohnPaul & Heather Schutz; 10 grandchildren: Kiersten & her husband Andrew Renuart, Matthew, Anthony, Grayson, John Paul, Beau, Anna, Gilliam, Wade, and Oliver; and great-grandson Benedict. He is also survived by his brother Frank and his sisters Mary Holmes, Susan Prematta, Jane Aud, and Nancy Pugaczewski.
