Thomas Justin Maguire was born in Atlanta’s St. Joseph Hospital on November 3, 1945 to Maurice J, Sr. (Mac) and Frances Conry Maguire, who preceded him in death.
Growing up in Atlanta, Tom attended Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary School and Marist School where he enjoyed playing baseball. Tom went on to further his education completing a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Georgia State University. He also continued his education receiving a Master of Business Administration from Georgia State University and a Juris Doctor in law from Woodrow Wilson College of Law.
He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force in November, 1968. He served four years as a computer officer and was stationed at Langley AFB, Virginia. During his career he was presented the Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force after earning the rank of Captain.
In his professional life, Tom had a career working in the United States Federal Government with General Services Administration’s Public Building Service. Tom’s government career began when he was assigned to work in the area of planning from which he advanced to Deputy Assistant Regional Administrator of Public Building Service. He attained a Meritorious Service Award for outstanding dedication to government service with Public Building Service. In later years he was reassigned the position of Director of Property Disposal from which he retired after a total service with GSA of thirty-seven years.
Additionally Tom was known for being:
>an affectionate and faithful husband of forty-one years, loving father, and proud grandfather.
>Irish (100%) and proud of it. Happy that he was able to accomplish a lifelong goal of visiting his family castle, Enniskillen Castle in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland during his travels with his family.
.>an exercise fanatic—Tom played tennis competitively and worked out every day of his life. He was on many ALTA championship teams. He was the Singles Champion of the 1st Annual Marist Alumni Tennis Tournament. He also enjoyed many other sports including golf, racquetball, softball and basketball.
>a faithful friend to many, including friends going back to kindergarten and elementary school years.
>a man with an insatiable thirst for History in general and Military History in particular. Tom always had a large hardcover book under his arm if he thought there was an opportunity to read. He was fascinated with historical figures that made a difference in the World.
>a man with strong virtues and principles from which he never strayed.
Despite his recent battle with glioblastoma brain tumors, his spirit remained strong. He was Linda’s hero, Kelly and Mauri’s Irish Blessing, and his grandson Little Mac’s Big Mac. He was called to rest on Friday, December 17, 2010.
In his famous last words he would say “Carpe diem,” (Seize the day), a favorite saying passed down from his own father.
Cherishing his memory, he leaves behind his faithful and dedicated wife, Linda; loving daughters, Kelly Maguire and Maureen Maguire Brune ; son-in-law, Greg Brune; grandson, Henry Maguire Brune (Mac); brothers, Maurice Jr. and Patrick; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charlie and Dollie Hollman; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Maguire, Karon Maguire Debbie Doyal, Diane Hollman, Jane Hollman and Lisa Jones; brothers-in-law, Douglas Hollman, Lance Doyal, and Robert Jones as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
