Susan, a lifetime resident of Marietta, Georgia, attended Powers Ferry Elementary School and graduated with Sprayberry High School’s Class of ’65. She continued her education at Shorter College in Rome, Georgia, earning a degree in Education as well as becoming President of her class’ alumni group. Throughout her academic journey, Susan participated in or lead school activities, such as public speaking, spirit squad, and cheerleading, as well as yearbook editor. Her passion for education continued as she was awarded Master's degrees in Education and Leadership at West Georgia College in Carrollton.
For over 30 years, Susan devoted herself to teaching Cobb County high schoolers as an English teacher. She began her career at Campbell High School in Smyrna before moving on to Oakwood High School and concluding at Walton High School. She then became an Associate Professor at Kennesaw State University mentoring young students pursuing an educator career. During her career she spent most holidays and summers working as a social worker alongside her mother, Florence Beddingfield, at the Cobb County Emergency Aid.
In retirement Susan and her husband, David, explored the United States traveling in their Airstream visiting friends and family from coast to coast, cruising the Caribbean and visiting the UK. Those journeys allowed Susan to create lasting memories, forge new friendships, and deepen her connections with friends from High School and College. She remained involved in the Cobb County Retired Teachers' Association.
Susan is survived by husband, Dave Ellis; her son, Chris Stansell; brother, Bill Beddingfield and sister, Cherie Smith. She leaves behind nephew, Ryan Beddingfield, and two nieces, Savannah and Sommer Smith. Susan was preceded in death by her parents, William and Florence Beddingfield.
In remembrance of Susan's compassionate nature, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Center for Family Resources, formerly known as Cobb County Emergency Aid, in lieu of flowers.
Susan will be remembered as a remarkable educator, a devoted wife and mother, and a cherished friend. Her dedication to education, spirit, and optimism touched the lives of countless individuals.
A Celebration of Life for Susan will be held at a future date. We extend our deepest gratitude to all those who have offered their condolences and support during this difficult time.
