Past Republican Representative from Georgia, Standish Fletcher Thompson, age 97, of Marietta, Georgia passed away on Tuesday, September 13, 2022. Fondly known as Fletcher, he was born February 5, 1925 in College Park, Georgia; attended the public schools and Russell High School in East Point, Ga., graduated from Emory University in 1949 and from Woodrow Wilson College of Law in 1957; was admitted to the bar in 1958 and commenced the practice of law in East Point, Ga.; president of an insurance firm; served in the United States Army Medical Corps in 1943; served as navigator with the Air Rescue Service in the United States Army Air Corps, 1944-1946; during the Korean conflict, 1950-1953, served as pilot with the United States Air Force; elected to the Georgia general assembly as State senator from the thirty-fourth senatorial district in 1964; elected as a Republican to the Ninetieth and to the two succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1967-January 3, 1973); was not a candidate in 1972 for reelection to the United States House of Representatives but was an unsuccessful candidate for election to the United States Senate; resumed the practice of law in Atlanta; he owned and operated a trucking company; member, Atlanta Regional Commission, 1985.
After leaving the U.S. House, Thompson returned to his law firm in Atlanta. In 1985, he was made a member of the Atlanta Regional Commission. From 2009 until 2011, Thompson served as the Commander of the Atlanta World War II Roundtable, an organization that was created in 1986 "to hear and record the war experiences of World War II and to pass on to posterity the knowledge of World War II and the price – human and material – that was paid by our nation for the preservation of freedom in the United States and the World"
He was married to the late Kathryn Cochran Thompson whom was always gracious and engaging, Kathryn was Fletcher’s vital and supportive partner throughout his political career as a Georgia State Senator and a US Congressman representing Georgia’s Fifth District.
Fletcher is survived by two children, Charles Lawrence Thompson and Deborah J Thompson, both of Marietta, two grandchildren and their spouses; George Standish Orlin (Stormy) of Macon and Spencer Thompson Orlin (Ali), of Smyrna, and nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held Saturday, October 29th at Sandy Springs United Methodist Church, 86 Mount Vernon Hwy, Sandy Springs, GA 30328.
