Sonjia Annette Payne Griffin, was born on November 13, 1951 in Atlanta Georgia to William and Edith Payne and died December 7, 2023 in Marietta Georgia after a short illness and a long battle with cancer.
Sonjia grew up in Smyrna with her parents and 2 brothers, Dennis and Keith. This is where she developed her love cooking, sports, outdoors, and her faith in God. In her free time Sonjia played sports on her high school team at Campbell High School and was known to be quite feisty despite being 5 '2". She was quite the singer as she loved participating in choir. Her love of music would carry on in her lifetime.
After graduation Sonjia married her high school sweetheart Roy Allan Griffin and together raised a son, Shawn and a daughter, Kimberly. It was love at first sight for Roy. and to hear him tell it she threw her books out of the school bus window onto his mustang and knew at first sight he would marry the love of his life. They never looked back. Together they would brave life for the next 54 years adoring one another.
Sonjia was a do-er and a go-getter. If you wanted something done everyone knew Sonjia would help take care of it! She had active roles in her children’s sports teams, school events, and friends. She could be found opening her home to all her children’s friends where sleepovers and endless laughter filled the rooms. She was a loving wife, mother, friend, and everyone’s biggest cheerleader. She adored her two dogs, Bubbles and Jackson, both rescues that brought a smile to her face. Sonjia was also blessed with a green thumb and always knew the tricks for growing plants and flowers. She and Roy traveled to many parts of the world and were blessed with many unique experiences. Among her favorite trips was yearly visits to the CMA Festival in Tennessee. She knew no strangers and loved all like family. Whether she was encouraging you to swim in her pool or letting her make you dinner, her zest for life was infectious. Most will fondly remember Sonjia for her beautiful smile, her unwavering support, and her encouraging words. Even in her final days she would ask about your family remembering each little detail and providing encouragement to all.
Sonjia is survived by her loving husband Roy, her son Shawn and his wife Cheryl and their two children Christian and his wife Madisyn, and their daughter Megan, her daughter Kimberly and her husband Gerard, her brother Keith and sister-in-law Susan, sister in law Linda Hogue and her husband Terry, numerous nieces and nephews. grandchildren, a great grandchild by marriage. She will be greatly missed and remembered fondly by all.
The Celebration of Life will be at Georgia Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery. It is located at 2000 Cobb Parkway SE, Marietta, Georgia 30060. They can be reached at 770-432-0771. The family is receiving friends and guests starting at 1:00 PM. The Celebration of Life Services begin at 2:00 PM followed with internment graveside at 3:00 PM.
