Ronald Eugene Straughan, 73, of Marietta, Ga passed away on September 9, 2018 at Tranquility at Kennestone Mountain, after a long battle with cancer. A memorial service, with military honors, will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 22nd at East Cobb United Methodist Church, 2325 Roswell Road, Marietta, GA 30062. There will be a reception immediately following the service in the activities building.
Mr. Straughan was born in Winston Salem, N.C. to the late Cora Opal Swain Straughan and Cad Leon Straughan. He grew up in Decatur, GA and graduated from Southwest Dekalb High School in 1962. He attended West Georgia College then graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha while serving in the United States Air Force.
After several years of working in the family owned Hickory Farms store, Mr. Straughan enjoyed a long career in real estate and land development. He was a faithful member of East Cobb United Methodist Church where he received the Man of the Year award in 1998 in recognition of his dedication and service.
Golf was a lifelong passion, beginning at age 6, bringing him great pleasure and treasured memories with family members and friends. He was active in the Georgia Junior Golf Association and was on the high school and college golf team. He was also an avid Bulldog, Falcons, and Braves fan. He will be remembered for his fun-loving personality and appreciation of food and beverages shared with family and friends. Everyone who knew him admired his constant positive attitude and cheerful spirit.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy, sons David Andrew Carter (Jinny) and Branen Wade Straughan (Jill Potter) and grandchildren Anna Lillie Carter, Peyton Roane Carter, Breckyn Jeffrey Straughan, and Annaliesa Elaine Potter, brother Jerry Swain Straughan (Ann) of Jacksonville, Fl. and Mary Straughan. He is preceded in death by his brother C.L. Straughan, Jr. He was loved and adored by his many cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested for donations to be made in Ron’s memory to East Cobb Methodist Church, Marietta, GA.
