On July 15, 1959, Richard married the love of his life, Sandra Palmer and they spent the following sixty-three years together before his passing.
Along with his parents, Richard is preceded in death by his brother, Robert Kessler.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Kessler; daughters, Jenny (Tom) Osteen and Vicky (Tom Butsch) Boyce; grandchildren, April Osteen, T.K. Osteen, Ryan Boyce and Samantha Boyce; step-grandchildren Catherine (Jorge) Villarreal and Christopher Butsch; sister, Carol Sowell, brother, Kenny (Nadine) Kessler, sister-in-law, Barb Kessler; and many extended family members and friends to cherish his memory.
Richard (“Dick”) graduated from Calvert Hall College High School in Baltimore, Maryland and attended the University of Baltimore. He then went into active duty with the Navy Air Corps, and later the Reserves. Upon discharge from the service, Dick began a career with Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, starting in sales and working his way up the corporate ladder until his retirement as a senior human resources executive in 2002.
If you knew Dick, you know that he cared deeply about his family, his country, and golf. A member of Indian Hills Country Club in Marietta for the past 40 years, his name can be found on many trophies and winners’ plaques. When his wife Sandy took up the game upon her retirement, the two embarked on a golf adventure that went on for decades. Their shared love of the game took them all over the US and abroad, traveling extensively and enjoying life together 18 holes at a time. A gifted teacher, he spent many years as a volunteer for the GSGA, mentoring young golfers and officiating tournaments. He was an avid birdwatcher, an accomplished handyman, a creative problem solver, and made the world’s best crab cakes.
Nothing gave Dick more pleasure than to be with his beloved family. At the frequent gatherings and celebrations, he always took the time to say how much he loved and appreciated his family and what a lucky man he was. He was a wonderful husband, father, and provider; always had a kind word and a quick wit; and was a friend to many.
