Richard Joseph Campbell, 79, of Marietta, Georgia, passed away on April 28, 2017. A Life Celebration will be held Saturday, May 6 at the home of Richard and Sue Campbell. Richard was born on February 5, 1938 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Dorothy Carrigan Campbell and the late Richard Wilson Campbell. In 1956 he graduated from Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, Pennsylvania where he was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame in 2012.
Richard graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1960 with a Bachelor’s degree in Science. After graduation, Richard married the former Susan Robinson of Philadelphia. They moved to Fort Benning, Georgia where Richard attended Ranger and Airborne training. Following training, he served in the 508th Airborne Battalion as a Company Commander in Panama for three years. After his service, he joined AT&T in a management role. While with AT&T he earned his Master of Science in Industrial Management at Stanford University as well as graduating from the Executive Market Management Program at the Wharton School of Business. Following a successful career with AT&T, Richard began an independent telecommunications consulting firm in 1980 and continued this work until his death.
Richard volunteered for the homeless veterans community. He worked through the St. Ann Catholic Parish in Marietta to provide refurbished bikes and backpacks filled with necessities for homeless veterans. Richard is survived by his wife of 56 years, Susan Robinson Campbell. He is also survived by four sons, Doug, David, Eric, and Jeff, daughter-in-law, Marci, and sister, Jean Rosen of New Jersey. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bob Campbell of Pennsylvania. Richard’s grandchildren are Griffin, Nicholas, Carleigh, Lilliana, Adeline, Sadie, and Ella.
